Little Things Matter Most!

We have finally decided to give our kids a weekly allowance. Grownups are always so sensible – we say no to anything our kids want to buy. We may say no because what they want to buy may contain too many chemicals, dyes or artificial flavoring, we may say no because what they want is not needed, or not practical, or bad quality, or whatever. We say no because we know best, and because we don’t want to waste any money on nonsense.
But, children don’t see things the way we do. A beautiful paperdoll, that may not even last through the day, may be worth $5.00 to a child, simply because they get to play with it as long as it lasts…
Anyway, I got the point. I started giving my kids $4.00 a week a few weeks ago. One of them saves up the money and buys things that he has wanted for a while, and the other one can’t wait to spend it every week, and then she wonders why she never has enough to buy what she really wants. It will be interesting to see if she’ll learn to save up for what she wants, too, eventually. I think these are important lessons to learn as early as possible, since many grownups still haven’t learned this, and they get in credit card trouble as a result.
However, we are working way too hard these days. My husband and I are in the beginning phases of building a new house. And by building a house, I don’t mean that we hire someone to do it for us. We are doing everything ourselves! Yesterday, I did the whole electrical layout for the project, because I do the electrics and the phone lines, and my husband does the plumbing, heating and everything else. How many people do you know that can actually build a house from beginning to end without hiring many different kinds of contractors? Very few, I’d say. But inspite of this, we are both basically unemployable because we have always worked for ourselves and have no resumes or work references from anyone, so nobody will hire us for anything. Something is definitely wrong with this system…
But, that wasn’t what I was going to talk about. The point is, we are working too hard at the moment, and have very little time to spend with our kids. So, on the weekends we take time off, and every Sunday we go to the local outdoor hotsprings swimmingpool to hang out and forget about work. The last time we were there, soaking in the warm water, our kids decided to buy a whole bag of big marshmallows with their allowance money, and they came and surprised us with the tasty treats. And, while I was soaking and eating marshmallows, which of course is something I wouldn’t have even considered buying, I enjoyed myself so much that I thought “This is it! This is life!” It is the little things that matter, especially if they are surprises! Who would have ever thought that eating marshmallows in a hotsprings swimmingpool could be so enjoyable? I’m very grateful to my kids for the experience…
