Body Image – Do You Feel Beautiful?

Did you know that if you ask most women if they are happy with the way they look, they will say no? Some women may have enough confidence to say “Yes, apart from…” (you fill in the blank). But even the most gorgeous models don’t love the way they look – they just know how to enhance their most beautiful assets, and hide the rest.

The fact is, NOBODY is perfect! And why should they be? Have you ever seen a perfect tree? Unless it is grown on a christmas tree farm where they trim off any branches sticking out too much, a tree, as you find it in nature, is never perfect. A big branch is pointing one way, a crooked one another way, but still, it is perfectly beautiful in its own way. But when it comes to people, we just don’t see it that way. We think we have to be more perfect than what nature has made us!

Women, especially, learn very early in life that they are not perfect. It doesn’t matter who is telling you these things, but if anyone starts pointing out flaws about the way you look, it sticks and turns into self-consciousness later. Even children become very critical about how others look, and when they become teenagers, they start realizing that they are not perfect, either, and then they, too, start suffering from the same negative self image, just like the rest of us.

I remember growing up too fast, and being told that I had arms like sticks, a neck like a giraffe, that my cat eye glasses made me look like a nerd and that the pants my grandmother bought for me were “liver colored.” Now that was more than enough to make me feel like an “ugly duckling,” and I spent my teenage years hoping and praying that I would one day turn into a swan.

I am sure every woman out there has a similar story, and we all end up feeling like ugly ducklings instead of learning to focus on our postive assets instead. There is always going to be something that isn’t perfect, and other things are are very pretty. We just have to learn to focus on what is pretty, instead of becoming obsessed about what is not.
