What Moisturizer to Choose

Thick or thin? Many women are confused about this. Traditionally, we are told that if we have dry or mature skin, we need a thick moisturizer. NOT SO!!!

If the skin is dry or mature, the main thing we need is a MOISTURIZER. So, what exactly is moisturizer? It is a cream that is high in moisture, obviously. But do you think a thick cream is high in moisture? NOT…
Moisture is water, or components that can hold water, such as hyaluronic acid, lecithin, honey, glycerin etc. Notice that oils and butters are not listed here. Why? Because oils and butters are skin softeners, not moisturizers.

Moisturizers and skin softeners actually have two different purposes. A moisturizer is supposed to go into the skin and increase the water levels in the skin cells. This will plump the skin back up and remove some of the wrinkles caused by evaporation of water from the cells.

A skin softener made with rich oils and butters, however, will simply keep the outer layer soft and create a barrier that stops evaporation of moisture, but it doesn’t actually add moisture to the skin cells.

Many people prefer to only use one product, but this doesn’t work. A skin softening barrier cream, such as the mature skin cream or natural face cream with chamomile , isn’t supposed to go into your skin cells, so if you add moisturizing agents to it, you are actually just waisting your money, because they, too, will sit on top of your skin since they are mixed with heavy oils and butters.

What, then, is the solution? The solution is simple, so simple, in fact, that I don’t know why the skin care industry doesn’t get it – all you need is products that can be layered.

My own company, Green Beauty Cosmetics, uses this concept. It makes perfect sense, that if your skin is dry or mature, you need a moisturizer first. The moisturizer should be thin, like a serum, so it can easily penetrate the skin cells and increase the moisture levels. However, that is not enough in itself.

Dry or mature skin doesn’t produce enough natural oils, either, so these have to be added to protect the moisture from evaporating. So, all you need is a layer of a thick, protective cream on top of your moisturizer, and your skin loves it! It doesn’t even take very long before you can see the difference!

You can still add more layers, if you wish. I usually top it off with a Tinted Facial Moisturizer that evens out my skin tone and gives me a touch of glow, but the tinted moisturizer is optional.
