Menopause and Creativity

Women are naturally creative beings – we create life, which is the ultimate in creativity. Then we nurture this new life and take care of it until it is ready to take care of itself. This is our main purpose as young women.

The women who choose not to have children often become creative in other areas instead, at work, in their homes, in their gardens, and so on.

When menopause comes, it is often a huge transition in many women’s lives. The children no longer need us, we transition from fertile women to infertile crones, the hormones affect our moods, our skins, and possibly even our relationships, and we may enter menopause with a mixture of fear, resistance and denial. What if we could change time? What if we could reverse the whole aging process? We don’t like the feeling of being left behind in the dust, and we desperately look to the beauty industry for answers. We need something that can give us hope…

But, actually, hope is never going to give us what we want. Hope is always in the future, never here and now. So, what IS actually here and now? An opportunity! A new beginning! A second wind!!!

Just think about it! We have just finished taking care of our children! We are free to explore other dimensions of life! We are free to express ourselves through our own creativity! We are no longer needed for diaper changes and nosebleeds. What that means is that all that energy is freed up and can go somewhere else!

So, where can it go? Pottery classes? Painting? Jewelry making? Cooking? Horseback riding? Hiking? Gardening? Knitting? Creating your own blog??? I can go on and on – you can even learn to meditate and give birth to yourself this time, if you wish. Finally, you are allowed to be selfish enough to pursue your own interests, so actually, we are all very lucky!

Here, I am reminded of the Chinese sign for crisis. It consists of two symbols – danger and opportunity. This is something that should be remembered when menopause is experienced as a crisis – we can choose to focus on the scary, unknown part of the transition, or we can focus on the opportunity part! If we focus on the opportunities instead, life can take on a whole new level of excitement! What about going back to school? What about starting up a small business? Anything is possible…

So, don’t be blue – be YOU, whatever that means…
