Makeup over 50

I’ve never understood the point of putting makup on with a trowel! Have you seen actresses who are so pretty that their choice of makeup actually ruins their beauty? Sandra Bullock is a good example. She is probably so pretty that she doesn’t need makeup at all, but she cakes it on in layers!

This kind of makeup use doesn’t enhance anyone’s beauty, nor does it make you look younger, and I don’t think men like it either. I have read info from many different sources that states that men hate it when they can actually see the makeup you are wearing on your face, especially on the skin. They much prefer a natural looking face, such as Christy Brinkley, who uses very light makeup.

She still uses makeup, but she does it in very subtle ways, which makes her face look naturally radiant, fresh and glowing.

I am a great believer in enhancing your natural beauty, and I don’t see any point in actually covering it up. Don’t believe the hype from makeover books for women over 50 where they tell you that the older you get, the heavier your makeup should be! Is heavy makeup supposed to make you look younger and more attractive??? NOT!

If you are over 50, the most important thing to do is to tint your eyebrows to get rid of any gray hairs. This will frame your face and give you a younger look, and nobody will even know that you use a tint. The most natural looking eyebrow tint that I have found is called “Refectocil” and I use the color “light brown” which tints the eyebrows in the most natural looking color, and the whole process only takes 5 minutes!

Next, pile on the mascara, use a translucent moisturizer, cover up your spots with cover stick, and use an illuminating cream under the eyes. Put a little bit of cream blush on the apples of your cheeks. It is harder to apply than powder blush, but it looks way more natural and glowy.

Top it off with some tinted lip gloss, and you are good to go! Forget about heavy duty lipsticks, lip liners and full coverage foundations and powders. Just keep it light, and use soft colors, and you will retain a younger look for a longer time.

Lip Liner

To line or not to line, that is the question!

I have read many makeup/makeover books, and they basically all state that when you get older, your lips loose definition, and that the only solution is to color them in with a lip liner before you apply the lip stick.

The loss of lip definition is a natural process that happens with age. Other things that happen is that all your colors become softer. So, when your hair and skin color become softer, do you think it looks flattering with harshly lined lips??? Hardly!

The truth is that lining your lips with a harsh lip line makes you look harsh and severe at a time in your life when you should rather opt for a soft look!

A much better option would be to soften the lip color and to use a sheer, translucent gloss. Why? Two reasons – glossy lips make your lips look bigger and fuller, and it also gives you a younger look. Try it, and you’ll see! It is amazing what a little bit of gloss can do for your look!

Stay away from frosting, glitz and glam – those effects should be left for anyone under 25. But, anyone can benefit with some gloss on the lips, especially if the lip color is sheer so that your natural lip color shows through.

The most flattering lip color is no more than one shade away from your natural lip color, and with a sheer lip tint, it is easy to get that “your lips but better” effect.

No more smudged mascara

I am so excited. I have just discovered how to avoid a problem I have had since I started using mascara. The problem is always that the mascara smudges under my eyes, probably because my eyes are a bit deep set. I have tried mascara after mascara. For a while, I even bought 3 different ones at a time at Walmart, and just took them back at the next shopping and got my money back. I just couldn’t find anything that didn’t smudge, no matter how many good reviews and stars other people gave them.

Anyway, I have finally found the solution, and I’m still surprised when I look in the mirror at the end of the day, and it still hasn’t migrated down my cheeks. And the solution is so simple – I just put a tiny bit of mascara on the bottom lashes, and then run my finger across the tips while the mascara is still wet. It still leaves the lashes black, but it won’t smudge because there is no excess mascara on the lashes.

I came up with this idea the other day. Now I have tried it for a few days, and it really does work. I even went and did an African dance class that made me sweat so much that my hair got completely wet, but my mascara still stayed put. As a final test, I went to the local hot springs swimming pool last Sunday, and it still didn’t smudge.

So, it isn’t a matter of finding the perfect formula. Many formulas will probably work. Just put less mascara on and wipe the excess off the tips, and voila, gorgeous lashes all day…

Falsies Mascara Review

Since I’m always on the quest for the perfect mascara, I couldn’t resist the new Maybelline Falsies mascara, which comes in a beautiful purple container.

The brush is really great – it has just enough curve that it is easy to apply the mascara without getting it all over your cheeks. I love it.

The mascara is supposed to be applied until you get the desired result. Don’t let it dry between coats, just keep piling it on. Just for fun, I put it on one eye, and then looked in the mirror to compare. And, it is true, with this mascara, it does actually look like you are wearing false eye lashes!!!

The only down fall of this one, and every other mascara I have ever tried, is the fact that it leaves a slight shadow under your eyes at the end of the day. So, I came up with a great idea:

I apply just a touch of mascara to the bottom lashes. Then, before it dries, I run the tip of my finger lightly across the lashes. It will still leave them black, but it removes all excess mascara. The result is, no more shadow below!!! Yeah! Definitely a winner!

This is the best mascara I have found so far! So if you like huge, dramatic lashes, you can’t go wrong with this one!

I love natural looking makeup that just enhances your natural beauty. I have never understood why anyone would want to cover up their skin until it looks like you are wearing a mask. Those kinds of foundations always look fake in daylight. Anyway, I just came across this cool makeup tutorial for natural looking makeup. CLICK HERE to check it out!
The girl looks gorgeous after just a very light touch of makeup, but oh, what a difference it makes!

Makeup for Menopause

As we hit menopause and beyond, many things changes. One of the things that changes is our natural coloring. The hair loses its vibrancy and takes on some kind of dullness, gray hair shows up, both on the head and on the eyebrows, which really changes the look of the face. The skin texture changes and the color becomes almost translucent. And even though the changes are subtle, you can see the all over effect when you look in the mirror. Pale and dull comes to mind…

So, what can we do to bring back some color to the face? The hair color can make a huge difference, but first, there are misconceptions that have to be cleared. Have you heard people say “the older you get, the blonder you should go?” This is not at all so! What it should say is “the older you get, the softer the color.” For example, if you are naturally jet black or very dark brown, lighten the hair a bit so you get less contrast between the hair and your skin. If you are very blonde, darken the color a bit with some honey blond or wheat to give your skin more warmth. If you have pale skin and freckles, you can’t beat a red tone, especially if you have blue eyes. Just stay away from any kinds of extremes, like burgundy or carrot, and don’t go too dark. If your hair has turned mousy brown, lighten it a bit if your skin is cool, and put a touch of red or chestnut in it if you have warm skin tone.

Also, I would recommend dying your eyebrows to get rid of white or gray hairs. Eyebrows frames the face and enhances your eyes, and getting rid fo the white hairs makes a huge difference. Refectocil is a great eyebrow color to use. They have a light brown that looks very natural since it doesn’t have any red in it, and the whole process is very simple and only takes 5 minutes.

When it comes to makeup, again, you must look for soft colors. I don’t believe in lining the lips with lip liner, even if they have lost some of their definition, because lipliner always gives you a harsh and painted look. Better option – tinted lip balm or lip gloss that just gives you a hint of color and shine. Tinted lips, especially with gloss, gives you a very young and sexy look. CLICK HERE to see Green Beauty Cosmetics’ new line of natural tinted lip balms!

And, don’t forget blush. I love cream blush, especially on mature skin, but any blush will do. Blush lights up your face more than anything.

Then, top it off with some gorgeous mascara, the more the better.

Funny enough, young girls and mature women can actually wear the same kind of makeup. Less is more in both cases…

Light daytime makeup

So, if the tendency is to wear less makeup now, what products should we choose?

One of the things that make people think someone is pretty is nice skin texture and even color. This seems to mean more to people than the appearance of a few lines here and there. So instead of obsessing about how many lines are showing up on the face, it is better to focus on how to improve your skin texture.

After cleansing and moisturizing, there are 3 skin products you shouldn’t go without – concealer, highlighter and tinted moisturizer.

Tinted moisturizer is a great product to use for a light daytime look. The purpose of the tinted moisturizer is to even out uneven skin color, NOT to give your face more color. More color can be achieved by using blush or lip products. The tinted moisturizer should only even out your natural color, and possibly give you a touch of glow.
CLICK HERE to see Green Beauty Cosmetics tinted moisturizer in three different shades.

For concealer and highlighter, I can recommend Maybelline’s “age rewind” which is a tube with highlighter on one end and concealer on the other end. Make sure you buy the right shade for your skin type.

Apply the concealer under the eye near the corner. Avoid the outer part of the eye where the lines usually appear. This part doesn’t need concealer. It is usually the inner part that tends to show up as darker areas. Also cover any age spots you may have and blend so they aren’t so obvious.

Dab the highlighter under the eye brows and blend in. Put a drop on the inner corner of the eye, and if you have bags under your eyes, put a little bit UNDER the bag. Remember, the sunlight hits your face from above, and if you have bags, they create a shadow on your face, right under the bags. By putting a little bit of highlighter there in a lighter color, it reduces the shadow effect.
You can also put a little bit of highlighter on top of each cheek bone if you wish.

Your skin is your canvas. With a good tinted moisturizer and a light concealer and highlighter, your face is now ready for color makeup, such as blush or tinted lip balm. Remember, makeup shouldn’t be obvious, you should see only the effect of the makeup, not the makekup itself.

Mascara review again

After doing my safe mascara list, one of the safest of the mascaras was Milanis super last semi permanent shiny black, so I found it on ebay and decided to give it a try.
Putting it on was easy, and the result was not spectacular, but it was ok. It held up for most of the day without smudging or leaving a shadow. However, by night time, it was leaving lots of little flakes under my lashes, so I decided to remove it instead of leaving it on for 3 days, which is what it said you could do. So, I rubbed my own Green Beauty Cosmetics eye makeup remover into it, and the weirdest thing happened – the mascara didn’t resolve like mascaras normally do. Instead, it turned into big, sticky flakes that got stuck on my skin, in my eyelashes and worst of all, they got into my eyes. I rubbed and wiped and had to rinse my eyes out, just to get rid of it, and it wasn’t a fun experience. So, a big NO to this one, and definitely two thumbs down!!!

This weekend we were going to spend the day at the local hot springs swimming pool, so I applied Maybelline’s colossal mascara, just to see how it would hold up in 99 degree water for hours on end. After about 4 hours of splashing around, I could barely see a faint shadow under my eyes, but not enough to look like a racoon. Not bad actually. I think Maybelline’s colossal mascara is going to be my favorite for a while.
