Cold weather skincare

Living in Colorado, the air is definitely starting to be a bit nippy, especially while walking the kids to the shcool bus in the morning. So, I always make sure I do my face before I go outside.

Cold, dry weather is a veritable skin killer! It freeze dries your skin! Younger skin has enough natural oils in their skin to be able to handle the cold better, but when you start getting mature skin, it is a totally different story.

As we get older, we produce less hyaluronic acid and less oil. This means, drier skin with less protection. If we don’t add moisture and oil, the skin gets easily damaged and even more dry, and wrinkles are the result.

Wrinkles and lines aren’t just from old age, they are mainly from environmental influences.

My grandmother, who is now 95, has the most beautiful skin, almost wrinkle free. She used to spend tons of money on cosmetic products, and we were all laughing and thinking she was a bit silly to do so. However, at 95 you can really see the effect of her daily pampering. Her own daughter, who is 65 and a sun worshipper, has more wrinkles than her 95 year old mom!

To me, this really shows the value of good skincare habits. So, how do we best take care of the skin in the winter?

The most important product to put on your skin is a natural face moisturizer that is thin enough that it can penetrate deep into the skin and increase the moisture levels in the skin cells. A good moisturizer should contain hyaluronic acid, a natural component of the skin that can hold 1000 times its own weight in water. This works like a sprinkler system that will help keep the skin hydrated, and it can be used on any skin type.

Mutton dressed as lamb

By mati | Filed in Life

Have you ever heard this expression? Mutton dressed as lamb is an English expression – it means that you are an old sheep trying to pretend that you are a lamb by dressing as a lamb. What has that got to do with you? If you are a menopausal women who is pretending to be a maiden by dressing inappropriately for your age, you are basically mutton dressed as lamb.

I saw an example of this last week when I attended a local party. A lady in her sixties who showed up with her husband, was dressed in a short babydoll minidress and tights, and even though she had the figure to pull it off, it didn’t make her look younger at all, it just made her look stupid.

What we have to remember is that every stage of life has its own beauty and its own purpose. Young maidens dress seductively because they are supposed to seduce a mate and start making babies. So, dressing in a babydoll minidress and tights is just the right thing for them.

The next stage is the mother. Her clothes are less seductive and more comfortable or practical. She knows that she’ll get dirty while taking care of her children, so she wears clothes that are comfortable and can be worn around children.

The third stage is the crone. She is done with creating life for others, and now she is creating life for herself instead. Menopause is about finding your inner goddess, your own style and your own wisdom, and to be a goddess, curves are needed. We aren’t supposed to compete with the young maidens firm and curveless body, we are supposed to celebrate our new found curves as well as the fruits of all our life experiences.

There was a time when elders were honored and respected for their wisdom, but this is no longer happening. Now, only the young women are honored for their beauty, and anyone who can’t compete seems to have totally lost their value.

The problem here is that we have accepted this perception of reality -that youth and beauty are the only things worth having. If we want this to change, WE are the ones who can turn this around. WE are the ones who can refuse to participate – to refuse having laser treatments to erase the signs of time on our faces, to refuse to go on strict diets to regain the body that we once had, to refuse to believe that beauty is only on the outside. What about inner beauty, love, wisdom and understanding? That must have some value, too! If it doesn’t, we must GIVE it value by appreciating ourselves as we are.

Let us be curvy goddesses with lots of life wisdom and interesting faces that show the experience of life etched into our lines. Let us wear loose, flowing goddess clothing that shows off our curves in the right places and hides them in other places. Forget about tights, babydolls and miniskirts and opt for long, flowing dresses and skirts. Deside to be comfortable in what your body has become, and stop trying to compete with the teenagers. You can’t win, no matter how much you try, so why not create your own style instead?

So, get rid of your old, skimpy stuff and give yourself a makover. Find your inner goddess (yes, we all have one), take her shopping, and amaze yourself! What are suitable clothes for a goddess? Babydolls and tights? NOT! More like chiffon dresses and vintage drapey coats, or loose assymmetric tops with ruches and cowl necks, and long flowing skirts. Oh, yeah! Celebrate the joy of being a woman of maturity!!!

Sagging eyelids

By mati | Filed in Makeup Tips

Oh, the joys of becoming a crone! As everything starts to loosen up, the skin on the eyelids also starts to sag. My mother used to say that gravity works on everything except your nose. Sad, but true…

If you don’t feel like having your eyelids cut and lifted, which by the way, could leave you with eyelids that don’t close properly, but they don’t tell you that, a much less extreme solution is to simply use eye makeup to “fix” the problem temporarily.

Brown eye makeup is a mature woman’s best friend. The shade of brown has to match your skin tone. The best color of brown is just a little bit darker than you skin color, so it doesn’t look harsh. If you have cool skin tone, a taupe, pinkish or silvery brown is nice. If your skin tone is warm, pick a warmer brown, like a hazelnut brown or orangy brown.

On eyes that are not deep set, apply the brown lightly all over the lid and all the way up to the crease and beyond. Make sure that the droopy part of the eyelid gets a nice coating, too. This is because dark colors make things recede and look less prominent. Just make sure you pick a brown that is matte, since glitter and frosting has the opposite effect. Then, use a light, peachy or cream highlighter under the outer edge of the brow to “lift” the eyes, and put a touch on your inner corner as well, to give yourself a bright eyed look.

For deepset eyes, brown eyeshadow on the lid really doesn’t work. Since the eyes are already receded, they need to be brought forward instead. Therefore, deep set eyes should always have light shadow on the lid, inner corner and under the brow. You can even pick a shadow with a bit of shimmer if you wish. And, don’t mark the crease with a darker color, since you don’t need to accentuate your already existing crease. Just take the light shade all the way up to your brow bone, where your brown shadow starts. Use a matte brown to help recede your prominent brow bone.

Then line your eyes lightly with a soft pencil, smudge it a bit to soften the look, put a touch of brown under the outer corner, and then top it off with tons of mascara. Voila – sagging eyelids be gone!

Red Lipstick

By mati | Filed in Makeup Tips

One of the things we bought in our Halloween spree the other day was a very scary, very bright, red lipstick that I normally wouldn’t even consider, since my natural coloring is muted, and this lipstick is way bright. But, you can’t wear beautiful muted colors when you are a gothic vampire witch with a dramatic black and red dress.

One of the problems with really red lipstick is the fact that the colors tend to bleed up toward the nose. While that is not a bad look for Halloween, I would rather not have it! This bleeding of color has to do with synthetic colors in the lipstick. As far as I know, synthetic colors are water soluble, and under the nose, because there is water in the air we breathe, there is always going to be some kind of moisture there that will make these kinds of colors bleed.

Natural earth pigments, like the ones I put in the lip tints that I make, are oil soluble, and therefore, they won’t bleed at all. But synthetic colors bleed, whether you have actual lines above your lips, or not.

The solution to this annoying problem is not too difficult. Many people love to dab on lots of powder to prevent the bleeding, but this is way too fake and obvious in daylight. Another solution is to just rub in a bit of very rich cream above your lip to prevent the bleeding, something with shea butter or cocoa butter works very well.

The other problem with red lipstick is the tacky fact that it often ends up on your teeth. Again, this is a great Halloween look, but if it happens when it isn’t Halloween, you’re in trouble. Red lipstick on your teeth totally ruins your beautifully made up look and makes you look tacky and trashy.

Again, the solution is simple. After you put the red lipstick on, stick your finger in your mouth, close your lips around the finger and pull the finger out. You’ll see red lipstick on the finger, as it cleans away all the stuff that would otherwise end up on your teeth, and voila, red lipstick with style!!! (and white teeth…)

Halloween

By mati | Filed in Create Your Own Clothing Style

Halloween is coming, and even though it is another 5 weeks until it is actually here, Walmart has already filled the isles with scary outfits.
I know, because yesterday, my daughter and I went shopping. From where I live, the nearest Walmart is 55 miles away, and my daughter didn’t really want to come, but she had to, since I didn’t want her to stay home alone all day.
Anyway, as soon as we got to Walmart, the Halloween section was like a magnet. We spent hours, and hours there, looking at everything, and my daughter insisted on trying everything, too, even though it was packaged and probably wasn’t supposed to be tried in the shop.
Buying a Halloween outfit for myself was the last thing on my mind, but since I ended up spending 5 hours in that section, I couldn’t help but look at grown up outfits while I was there.
There were some really cool gothic outfits with belt buckles everywhere, scary platform boots and nasty looking eye makeup. If I had scary platform boots, I would definitely go for that look, but it just doesn’t have the same effect with leather ballerina flats. So forget it!
Then, there was Cleopatra, supposedly the most beautiful woman who ever lived. The dress looked like a white sheet with a hole for a neckline, with a gaudy belt and a very outdated hair style. NOT! I was actually more attracted to the escaped mummy who had made a dress out of all the rags and put toilet paper in her hair. At least it was creative. But, a toilet papered mummy isn’t really an expression of me…
Then there was little red riding hood in a mini skirt – very silly – and witches with big pointy hats. Really – those pointy hats definitely has an outdated look as well. Magical witches should be able to be more creative than that. And angels – great if you are an angelic type – and devils – the other side of the coin…
The worst one was a cupcake!!! Who in their right mind would want to dress up as a cupcake? Unless, of course, you were planning to have someone eat you… I say no more.
The one I settled on was a gothic vampire – scary, I know, but there was something appealing about that outfit. Except for the dum red collar that was choking me. So, the red collar had to go. Then, I ended up in the Halloween accessory section, and there I found a gothic choker, that choked me less, and looked way better than that red foam collar that made me look like I just came from the vet’s office, and I also found a beautifully modern witchy hat decorated with black feathers and a veil with spiders. Oh, yes! I finally found my true self – a gothic vampire witch!!! (It is all about creating your own style, isn’t it?)
Next, we went and bought scary makeup – blackish nail polish, scary red lipstick and black and red eye makeup.
My daughter also ended up in a scary black dress with spider webs, so we are going to be quite a couple.
If I don’t scare away my husband, I’ll try to get him to take a picture of us when the time comes. Until then, I’d love to hear what outfits you all end up with…

Caring from the heart

By mati | Filed in Life
No Gravatar

Have you ever wondered why nobody seems to care? It is true, they don’t care, because caring is a higher quality of consciousness. Most people are at the level of the second chakra (energy center), which is all about who has power over whom, and who can get what. It is about taking, having, and getting more and more, it is about quantity, not quality.

Why do you think a book like “Getting the love you want” became so popular? Regardless of what the content of the book is, the title appeals to all the people out there who aren’t GETTING their needs or expectations met. Do you think the book would have been a best seller if the title was “Giving the love you want?” Hardly – Giving isn’t even part of the second chakra perception of reality.

Giving, caring, sharing, and appreciation of beauty and quality, rather than just wanting more and more of everything, is a quality that belongs to the heart, which is the fourth chakra.

So, the next time it bugs you that the people you run into rip you off, lie, cheat and generally do whatever it takes to get what they want from you, just remember that their lack of caring is happening because they haven’t expanded to a loving level of consiousness yet. They are not necessarily trying to be mean – they are just looking out for themselves, because that is all they know how to do.

Too bad, I know, but how do you teach a selfish person how to share, or how to care about others, or even how to truly love? With great difficulty, that’s for sure, since these are qualities that only come through awareness and expansion. All you can do is hope that some day, soon, they’ll actually “get it” and realize that they aren’t very nice or caring to anyone, and hopefully, they’ll even see with clarity that the world can only become a better place if they start living from their hearts.

Life isn’t just about GETTING something out of it. It is about living, giving and learning from it all. It is about caring, gratefulness and love, and it is about finding our lost connection to source again – the one thing that can’t be bought with money, gold or treasures, no matter how much you have to offer. This is your inner treasure – and your life is empty unless you find it…

Don’t resist

By mati | Filed in Life

Life is full of ups and downs, rights and wrongs. Life doesn’t care about human justice, fairness, integrity or convenience. Life just is, and earth school is where we learn from everything that happens… Or, do we?

Everything in this dimension is based on duality, yes and no, right and wrong, but in the bigger picture of things, none of this actually matters. In the bigger picture, there is no right or wrong, because it depends on how you see things, and what level of consciousness or understanding you are at.

According to enlightened masters, we are here to learn to go beyond this duality to a place where everything becomes one. This is what the sixth chakra is all about. The sixth chakra is an energy center between the eyebrows, also called the third eye. The third eye represents the two becoming one, in other words, going beyond duality.

So, how do we go beyond duality? What is the key? Just watch what happens when someone does something to you that isn’t right – you get angry, you defend yourself, you want to get even, you want to convince them that you are right and they are wrong, you resist…

But, how can you go beyond duality if you pick sides? Picking a side, any side, right or wrong, still keeps you stuck in duality. How to get unstuck? Stop resisting…

Whenever you resist, you are fighting against the whole universe. Whenever you resist, you are not in the flow of life. Whenever you resist, you are stuck in a tiny box, separate from the natural flow of things.

But, resisting is so tempting!!! Yes, and so addictive. Your ego loves a challenge, and the more you resist, the more you feed your ego.

So, what happens if you just surrender and go with the flow of things, regardless of right or wrong? There is only one way to find out – stop resisting…

Sleeve lengths

By mati | Filed in Fashion Tips
No Gravatar

I went through my closet the other day and tried on different tops to see what was worth keeping. All the tops had different sleeve length, so I really got to see the effect of it. At some point, I came across a sweater with 3/4 sleeves. I have always loved 3/4 sleeves, simply because they don’t get into everything you do. They are a bit out of the way, which is nice, but as a fashion statement, does it work?

I took a look in the mirror, and it didn’t look flattering at all. The sleeves stopped at the widest part of my hips and created two horizontal lines which basically added another 8″ to my hip measure.
And, who in their right mind, would want another 8″ added to their hips???

So, I tried another sweater with long sleeves, and what a difference that made. The hips went back to their normal size. Then I pulled the sleeves up to the elbow. That worked, too. It made the hips look slimmer with bare arms next to them. So, 1/2 sleeves work, while 3/4 sleeves don’t.

Then I tried a t-shirt with short sleeves. Short sleeves make horizontal lines right at your bust line. This is good if your bust is small, or your shoulders are narrow, or if your body shape is like a pear. By making your upper body look wider, it will balance out bigger hips. However, if your bust is large, stay away from short sleeves. With a large bust, you are better off with either a tank top, 1/2 sleeves or long sleeves.

So, I decided to get rid of my 3/4 sleeve sweater. Even though I like that length of sleeves, it makes my hips look dumpy unless I pull the sleeves up to my elbow. So, whoever came up with the idea of cropped sleeves, must have gone to the same school as the ones who came up with the idea of cropped pants. Now, I won’t even get started on how I feel about cropped pants. I’ll save it for another post…
